Michael Schumacher’s wife Corinna gave emotional update on F1 legend’s condition before ‘public appearance’

Michael Schumacher’s wife, Corinna, gave a rare insight into her husband’s condition during a 2021 Netflix documentary about the seven-time world champion.

Since the former F1 driver was left with life-altering injuries after hitting his head on a rock while skiing in the French Alps, details around his condition have been kept private by his family.

In fact, only a handful of people are said to be fully aware of Schumacher’s condition. Last year, former Ferrari boss Jean Todt, who worked with the German for more than a decade, gave an update to French newspaper L’Equipe.

Todt said: “Michael is here, so I don’t miss him. [But he] is simply not the Michael he used to be. He is different and is wonderfully guided by his wife and children who protect him.”

He added: “His life is different now and I have the privilege of sharing moments with him. That’s all there is to say. Unfortunately, fate struck him ten years ago. He is no longer the Michael we knew in Formula 1.”

Schumacher’s wife Corinna, who has battled to protect her husband from the public eye, has previously touched on why she prefers to keep Michael’s condition private.

She said: “We are getting on with our lives: ‘private is private’ as he always said. It’s very important to me that he can continue to enjoy his private life as much as possible. Michael always protected us, now we are protecting Michael.”

Speaking about her husband on the 2021 Netflix documentary Schumacher, Corinna also shared a brief insight into life after the near-fatal fall.

“I miss Michael every day but it’s not just me who misses him. It’s the children, the family, his father, everyone around him,” Corinna said.

“Everybody misses Michael, but Michael is here – different, but here. He still shows me how strong he is every day.

“I have never blamed god for what happened. It was just really bad luck – all the bad luck anyone can have in life.

“It’s always terrible when you say, ‘Why is this happening to Michael or us?’ But then why does it happen to other people?’

Corinna also opened up on the last words she heard from Michael before he hit his head on a rock while skiing.

“Shortly before it happened in Meribel, he said to me, ‘The snow isn’t optimal. We could fly to Dubai and go skydiving there’.”

She added: “We’d always made it through his races safely, which is why I was certain he had a few guardian angels that were keeping an eye out for him.

“I don’t know if it’s just a kind of protective wall that you put up yourself or if it’s because you’re in a way naive – but it simply never occurred to me that anything could ever happen to Michael.”
